(1821-85). Danish scholar, a student of Christian Thomsen, who was responsible for important developments in both the theory and practice of archaeology. He adopted Thomsen’s Three Age System and his book, Danmark’s Oldtid oplyst ved Oldsager og Grave-hoie (1842; English edition, The Primeval Antiquities of Denmark, 1849) was one of the first attempts to write a prehistory of any area; it includes an Appendix with some remarkably precocious comments on excavation techniques and principles.
