American Egyptologist who set new standards in field archaeology and in recording excavations, especially at Lisht and Deir el-Bahri. He worked at the temples of Queen Hatshepsut and Mentuhotep II and in the surrounding area of Theban necropolis with important 11th Dynasty tombs. He wrote "Excavations at Deir el Bahri 1911-1931" (1942).
