Watling Street

The most famous of the Roman roads in Britain, running from London northwest via St. Albans (Verulamium) to Wroxeter (Viroconium). It was built in the early years of the Roman occupation of Britain and was one of the great arterial roads of Roman and post-Roman Britain. The name came from a group of Anglo-Saxon settlers who called Verulamium by the name of Waetlingaceaster. This local name passed to the whole of the Roman road by the 9th century.

Roman road from Richborough to Chester in southern and central England, a major trunk route built in the early years of the Roman occupation of Britain. The road runs via Canterbury to London; thence it branches north-west to Veru-lamium, Towcester and Wroxeter, and finally turns north to Chester.
