The coiled cobra of ancient Egypt, worn by the pharaoh on his brow, usually combined with one or other of the royal crowns, as a symbol of his supreme authority. The cobra is associated with the goddess Wadjit or with the sun, whose "eye" it is held to be. It is an agent of destruction and protection of the king spitting out fire.
