Large shell midden in Chiba prefecture, Japan, excavated many times since 1893. Pit-houses, human skeletons and Middle and Late Jomon pottery were recovered. Radiocarbon dates of the 3rd millennium bc, the first dates carried out on Jomon materials, were received with scepticism when they were published in 1951, but have since been accepted.
