A layer of soil rich in organic material which indicates a stratum or buried turf. A turf line may be the remains of a buried land surface or an artificial structure, possibly the cap of a mound or a layer of sod consolidating a barrow or rampart. It may also be the remains of vegetation which grew on the soil before burial. A real turf line indicates a pause in construction long enough for a soil to have developed.
