Middle Palaeolithic rock shelter in the Crimea with artifacts (scrapers, bifacial foliates) and faunal remains (arctic fox, reindeer, wild ass). The skeleton of a child and bones of an adult are modern humans, which is problematic in relation to the dates of the artifacts and faunal remains.

A rock shelter in the Crimean limestone region of the southern USSR. In excavations in 1953 and 1954 Mousterian levels were removed. Most of the skeleton of a baby of perhaps one-and-a-half years of age was recovered, demonstrating that the general shape of Neanderthal babies’ skulls seems to be very similar to modern skull shape. A few pieces of an adult female were also found.
