Prehistoric Andean province and the language by its Inca empire people; it became official Inca language. Several dialects are still spoken in Peru and Bolivia and it was used for government and all communications between provinces under Inca rule. The term Quechua also refers to the Andean ecozone in which maize and other grains were grown in hillside terraces.
