A wild and domestic descendant of the wild boar, Sus scrofa scrofa, of continental Europe and southern Asia. Wild pigs formed part of the diet of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic hunters. The first records for wild pigs are from the Belt Cave in Iran, Jarmo in Iraq, and Tespesi in Kurdistan in the 7th millennium BC. Modern pigs derive from Sus scrofa vittatus, native to southeastern Asia and bred in China since the Neolithic. Wild pigs are believed to have been introduced on Christopher Columbus' second voyage in 1493 and brought to the mainland in the early 1500s.
