The dancing floor area for the chorus between the stage and the audience in an ancient theater. It was the lowest part of the Greek and Roman theaters and contained an altar, on which sacrifices to Bacchus were sometimes made. When permanent theaters were built, the orchestra was where the acting took place; actors gained access by means of a parados.
