A central Indian site in western Madhya Pradesh state, just north of the Narmada River - the ancient site of the capital of a Haihaya king, Arjuna Kartavirya (c. 200 BC), mentioned in the Sanskrit epics "Ramayana" and "Mahabharata". On the opposite bank of the Narmada lies the early site of Navdatoli where painted pottery and other artifacts have been excavated.

Central Indian site, facing Navdatoli on the opposite bank of the Narbada River. There is some trace of prehistoric occupation, but Maheshwar became a major site only after Navdatoli was abandoned, in the Iron Age and the medieval period.
