A city across from Assur on the Tigris River that was a cult and royal residence of Middle Assyrian king Tukulti-Ninurta I (1238-1197 BC). This king asserted Assyrian supremacy over King Kashtiliash IV, ruler of the Kassites to the southeast, and subjugated ancient Armenia to the northeast and, for a time, Babylonia. After constructing this new capital, he was slain by his son. There is a large palace complex, a temple of Assur, and domestic architecture.
