Any organization of a group of items into a series of classes ranked from high to low, each successively higher class having fewer members. In a social hierarchy, the ranking would reflect differences in power, prestige, or access to economic resources. In a settlement hierarchy, the individual sites might be organized on the basis of population size or number of functions fulfilled into a series of classes such as town, village, and hamlet.
