Site outside Smolensk on the River Volga, where excavations have revealed one of the largest Viking Age gravefields known from Russia. Most of the grave mounds contained cremations associated with oval brooches and other objects dating from the 9th and 10th centuries. The burial area itself seems to be associated with a very large trading station which controlled an area of the Baltic.
