A city in western Poland, situated on the once-great trade route which ran across Europe to Byzantium in the early middle ages. Excavations have revealed that by the 10th century there was a well-established trading centre here, with a large fortified acropolis containing stone palaces and churches. The lower part of the town was mostly devoted to artisans’ workshops.
