An extensive Early Iron Age village site west of Pretoria, South Africa, which has yielded an unusually complete picture of village life in the mid- 1st millennium ad. Remains of 13 circular houses, spread over an area of some two hectares, have been investigated. Iron-smelting is attested, as is the herding of cattle, sheep and goats. The typology of the Broederstroom pottery suggests that the Early Iron Age population of this area had connections with contemporaneous peoples further to the northwest.
