A rock-cut cave monastery, famous for its temple with internal stupas set in a kind of sanctuary, from the 2nd-1st centuries BC. The temple is decorated with sculpture in bas-relief, which are some of the earliest Buddhist works.

A Buddhist site in western Deccan, India. In the 2nd and 1st centuries bc, stupas and rock-cut temples and monasteries were excavated and decorated with sculpture in relief. The early 2nd-century BC vihara [monastery] has decoration which figures Vedic deities, appearing here as sy.abols of the Buddha who has assimilated their powers.
