Giovanni Battista (1778-1823). An Italian by birth, Belzoni made a reputation as an unscrupulous robber of Egyptian tombs for their antiquities, both on his own account and for the British Consul-General, who collected on behalf of the British Museum. An account of his colourful and bizarre adventures was published in the year of his death under the title Narrative of the Operations and Recent Discoveries within the Pyramids, Temples, Tombs and Excavations in Egypt and Nubia.
