A site in the Limpopo Valley, northern Transvaal, South Africa, where Iron Age occupation is dated to the 11th and 12th centuries ad. A large mound represents the debris of successive substantial settlements, the economy of which was evidently based upon the herding of cattle. The pottery and other artefacts show strong affinities with those from contemporary sites in the Bulawayo area of Zimbabwe. Controversy has surrounded the significance of some 70 human skeletons interred at Bambandyanalo: it was formerly believed that these indicated a non-negroid population, but the supposition is no longer maintained.
