(1875-1956). German scholar who excavated the major Mesopotamian city of Assur between 1903 and 1914. These excavations were of very high quality for that period. As well as exposing the major buildings of the Assyrian city, they excavated a sounding beneath the great Temple of Ishtar to expose a series of earlier temples, the first of which belonged to the Early Dynastic Period.
