Ahrensburg

A village near Hamburg, Germany, where there are two late Palaeolithic sites, Meiendorf and Stellmoor. Stellmoor dates to 8500 BC and is attributed to the Ahrensburgian culture. Tanged points, which were possibly arrowheads, and pine arrow shafts with bowstring notches give evidence for the use of the bow and arrow. The Ahrensburgians mainly hunted reindeer.

[Ahrensburgian]. A village close to Hamburg in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany; beside the village are two important late Palaeolithic sites, Meiendorf and Stell-moor, less than a kilometre apart. The main layer at Stellmoor is dated to c8500 bc, and some workers have attributed this to a distinct Ahrensburgian culture; it has tanged points which were possibly arrowheads, for this site has produced the earliest conclusive evidence for the use of the bow and arrow, in the form of a hoard of 50 pine arrow-shafts with bowstring notches (‘nocks’). The Ahrensburgians hunted mainly the reindeer.
