In probability, the rule that when two events are mutually exclusive, the probability that either or both of them will occur is equal to the sum of their individual probabilities: p(A or B) = p(A) + p(B). For events that are not mutually exclusive, the rule must be modified to subtract the overlap between events so that p(A or B) = p(A) - p(A and B).
