The eponymous tell site for a Middle Neolithic culture distributed in Oltenia, southwest Rumania, and northern Bulgaria in the late 5th millennium be. The tell has a long stratigraphy including an Aurig-nacian level, separated by a long hiatus from two Vadastra culture levels and a Salcuta culture level (dated to the early 4th millennium be). Detailed pedological, malacological and palynological analyses provide a clear picture of the Neolithic environment, which fluctuates from drier steppe to damper forest steppe. Large grain storage pits and draught animals for the plough indicate a mixed farming economy.
