(1880-1960). British archaeologist who excavated a number of major sites in western Asia, including Alalakh and Carchemish, but is best known for his excavations at Ur in 1922-9, as part of a joint Anglo-American expedition. He excavated many outstanding monuments at Ur, and his discoveries in the Royal Cemetery brought to the notice of the public the astonishing wealth and skills of the Sumerian civilization.
