Earliest of three stages of the Cochise culture, named after a small cluster of sites in southeast Arizona, USA. Evidence of plant food processing (e.g. cobble manos) together with split and burnt faunal remains, imply an Archaic lifestyle, although there is an almost complete lack of projectile points. It has been proposed that the poorly understood Cazador complex (which does have projectile points) may be the hunting component of Sulphur Springs, but this association is no more than hypothetical. Sulphur Springs sites have yielded radiocarbon dates from 7300 to 6000 be.
