An Italian poet, often considered the first humanist and perhaps the most influential individual of the early Renaissance. In 1337 he visited Rome for the first time, to be stirred among its ruins by the evident grandeur of its past. He provided a strong impetus for archaeological research by looking to antiquity for moral philosophy; his humanism led to a rediscovery of the past.
