One of two ceramic series (the other being Chicoid) which emerged from the Ostinoid series. Originating in Haiti, it remained largely confined to the western Greater Antilles, although there was some expansion to the west and north. Sites are normally village shell middens, but are often close to good agricultural land implying possible agricultural practice. The pottery which characterizes the series is thin and hard but with a rough surface texture; simple incision, sometimes combined with appliqued strips is the most common decoration. Dates are usually within the period 8501000, although some sites in central Cuba endured to as late as 1500.
