Levallois flake is a kind of special flake removed from a prepared core, sometimes a tortoise core. It took its name from a suburb of northern Paris, where an early example was found. In a more general way, the term ‘Levallois technique’ is used to describe this method of flaking. The concept of a Levalloisian culture defined by this technique is now obsolete.
